April 22 is set aside as Earth Day. Make every day Earth Day. Did you know that switching to a Raw Vegan Diet helps the planet?!

WHAT IS A VEGAN?

A vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is someone who, for various reasons, chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals. (from www.vegan.org)

WHAT IS RAW?

Raw foods - sometimes called living food - is plant or animal food that has not been heated above (about) 115F. Raw foodists believe that when heated above those temperatures, the enzymes in the food are destroyed or denatured, and cannot provide the same nutritive value. WHY WOULD I WANT TO EAT RAW?

Everyone knows that fresh fruits and vegetables are nutritious. But raw fooders have additional reasons for "going raw". Following are some of them.

  • The food is in its natural state, allowing the body to derive more nutritional benefit from it.
  • Eating an organic raw food diet allows the body to release toxins. Many raw fooders believe that the diet can lead to better health and even eliminate disease.
  • Eating a raw food diet will almost always lead to weight loss for those who need to lose weight - without the feelings of hunger and fatigue that accompany most diets.
  • People who eat a raw food diet experience improvement in their skin. They also have more energy and often start to look younger.

DANGERS OF COOKED FOODS

"Study shows food preparation may play a bigger role in chronic disease than was previously thought"

" Raw vegan cuisine is not just eating a salad three times a day.  It's a sublime culinary experience.  I'm constantly in awe of the vibrant colors and the flavors. And I truly enjoy the creative process of making these dishes for you.  I never realized that eating healthy could taste so good.  Try our foods and you'll be pleasantly surprised!" ~ Mariela

GO FOR ORGANIC

"A fruit or vegetable that is labeled organic means that it is grown and handled according to strict procedures without toxic chemical input.  The types of chemicals that might be used on non organically grown produce are herbicides (weed killers), fungicides (mold killers), and insecticides.  Many of these have been found to be potential cancer-causers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.  Another consideration is that pesticides and other toxins reduce a food's enzyme levels.  By eating and juicing organically you're avoiding any of those nutritional pitfalls." (from Gary Null's Ultimate Lifetime Diet)

Current health issue:  It is estimated that 1 in every 133 Americans has a condition known as Celiac Disease (a condition resulting from allergic reactions to gluten as contained in wheat and some other grains), while only 1 in 1,000 or so are actually diagnosed.  For those people who have it, a gluten free diet is highly recommended.  Read more...
